Authentic zellige vs zellige-look tile

Authentic zellige is hand-cut, hand-glazed Moroccan clay tile, so every piece varies in color, thickness and edge, with chips and pits that are part of the charm. Zellige-look ceramic or porcelain copies that glossy, shifting surface on a machine-made body, giving you a flatter, more consistent tile and an easier install, but without the true handmade depth.

What makes authentic zellige different?

Real zellige is made from natural clay, shaped and fired, glazed by hand, then chiseled into shape piece by piece. No two tiles match. You get shifts in tone, pooled glaze, tiny pits, crazing, chipped edges and slightly uneven thickness.

On the wall, that variation catches the light and makes a surface that seems to move. It is the whole point.

How much variation and lippage should you expect?

A lot, by design. Edges will not sit perfectly flush, so some lippage is normal and part of the look. Shades vary box to box, so the installer should blend tiles from several boxes as they go. Some pieces will be too chipped or warped to use. Order more overage than usual, often 15 percent or more.

Zellige-look tile has controlled variation in the glaze, but a flat, consistent body and straight edges. It installs like regular tile.

How is real zellige installed?

  • Use an installer who has set handmade tile before.
  • Back-butter each tile, since the backs and thickness vary.
  • Keep joints tight and even.
  • Seal the unglazed edges before grouting so grout pigment does not soak in, then seal the grout.
  • Expect a slower install than machine-made tile.

Where does each one work?

Authentic zellige shines on backsplashes, bathroom and shower walls with proper waterproofing, fireplace surrounds and feature walls. Its glaze is relatively soft, so floors are a risk except in very light-use spaces.

Zellige-look porcelain is the better pick for floors, high-traffic commercial spaces and anywhere you want a cleaner, more uniform version of the look.

How does the cost logic compare?

Real zellige costs more installed. The tile itself is handmade, you buy more overage, and the install takes longer and needs a skilled hand. Zellige-look tile is machine-made, calibrated, faster to set and comes with less waste. Same mood, different budget.

Questions we hear

Is zellige waterproof?

The glazed face sheds water, but the clay body and edges absorb it. On shower walls, rely on a waterproof membrane behind the tile and seal the edges and grout.

Can zellige go behind a stove?

Yes. It handles heat fine. Seal it so grease wipes off the edges and grout.

Can you use zellige on a floor?

Only in very light-use areas. For floors, zellige-look porcelain is the safer choice.

Does zellige-look tile have any variation?

Yes, in the glaze color and sheen, but the size, thickness and edges are consistent.
