Hotel Chelsea Spa
Basalt, bluestone, black marble, slate, travertine and custom stone mosaic floors for the spa at the Hotel Chelsea in New York.

The brief
The Hotel Chelsea is a New York icon. Its new spa needed to feel calm and grounded, a quiet place inside one of the city's most storied buildings. The design called for several natural stones working together, each in a different role.
What we supplied
We supplied the stone for the whole spa:
- Basalt for the walls and floors
- Bluestone moldings
- Black marble benches
- Slate for the sauna floor
- Travertine footbaths
- Custom stone mosaic floors
How it came together
A spa is a hard place for stone. It is wet, warm and used every day. Each material was chosen for its job: dark basalt for the main surfaces, slate where the heat is, travertine where people rest their feet, and solid marble for the benches.
Every one of those stones came through us as one order for the spa, so the design team had a single source for every surface instead of chasing several suppliers.
The mosaic floors were made to the design team's pattern, so they read as part of the architecture rather than an add-on.
The result
The result is a spa that feels of a piece, even though it uses several kinds of stone. The mosaic floors are the detail guests notice first. The dark stone everywhere else lets them stand out.
